Stuck in Vermont: Pie Society Serves Up Comfort in the Pandemic

In March of 2020, chef Jonathan Davis closed his restaurant, the Starving Artist Café in South Burlington s Davis Studio, due to the pandemic. By August, Jonathan had launched a new business called Pie Society. He bakes 80 to 100 pies every week and there are three options two savory, one sweet with two pickup locations. Jonathan is loving his new pie venture and has no plans to return to restaurant work. Eva met up with Jonathan at the Davis Studio, an arts education center and school founded by his mother, Teresa Davis. She watched him do some pie prep, tasted some pies and talked to Jonathan about his longtime love of the buttery nine-inch pastries. For the record, Eva is also a member of Pie Society although there is no official membership and has been eating his pies weekly since Thanksgiving.

From the Publisher: Camp Counseling

Courtesy of Camp Abnaki It might seem a bit incongruous that in the same week Vermont looks its most wintry, our parenting publication, Kids VT, is hosting a virtual camp fair promising fun in the sun six months hence. The timing makes perfect sense to those familiar with the summer salvation the event promotes. Especially this year, after 11 months of being cooped up with their kids, parents would love it if someone else could take them for a while. People who have attended summer camp tend to be repeat customers. The rest of the year pales by comparison to those weeks in the woods with individuals who are not your parents, siblings or schoolmates. Camp friends, who are generous with hugs and have a tendency to burst into song, are worth waiting for.

Four New Vermont Bakeries Offer Their Wares Direct to Consumers

He was explaining the roots of his latest culinary enterprise, Pie Society, which launched in August. As evidence, Davis offered an autobiography authored in kindergarten that highlighted his love of apple pie. The young foodie also documented a mythical world populated by creatures who ate only pie. Davis, now 28, went on to work at a number of Vermont bakeries, restaurants and confectioners, including Mirabelles Bakery, then in Burlington; the Spot in South Burlington; and Vermont Cookie Love in North Ferrisburgh. In late 2015, he opened the Starving Artist Café in South Burlington in the Davis Studio, an arts education center and school founded by his mother, Teresa Davis.
