Carl Vinson VA Medical Center selected for a fisher house

Listen to the content of this post: DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin will receive a Fisher House to help accommodate families visiting loved ones who are receiving medical care at a VA or military center. “Having a Fisher House on our campus will allow families to spend time with, and focus on, the long-term care and healing of Veterans we treat at our medical center,” said Medical Center Director David Whitmer. Whitmer says the new 16-room Fisher House will be constructed next to the hospice in Building 86 near Lake Leisure. This will allow visiting families easy access to the areas where veterans are receiving treatment. Families will also be able to take advantage of the walking trails, fishing piers and children’s playground nearby.

The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center joined forces with the USDA Farmers to Families Food Bank for the event. They gave away 150 boxes of food in addition to the 1,000 boxes provided in four previous giveaways. Due to COVID-19, recipients received their shots and food boxes through a drive-thru style service. VA Director David Whitmer said many veterans still need help because of the pandemic.

(WALB) - The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center and the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank of Macon are teaming up to give away food to area veterans. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at buildings 34/35 on the Dublin VAMC campus. Donations will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. “During this public health and economic crisis, I’m inspired with the Dublin VAMC employees, Middle Georgia Community Food Bank, and the selfless volunteers who go above and beyond so that veterans can receive wholesome, nutritious food,” said David Whitmer, medical center director. “Working with our community partners to help our veterans in need is consistent with our mission to serve those who have borne the battle and their families.”
