MACON, Ga. From busting blight and fighting crime to building affordable housing and boosting tourism, Mayor Lester Miller says the county is prioritizing how they re spending their first round of American Rescue Plan money.
The county is set to vote on how to distribute the first round of the funds a little over $18 million. Macon-Bibb is slated to see a total of $75 million in rescue funds overall.
The largest chunk of the first distribution of the county s Rescue Plan Money could go to one of the county s biggest priorities right now blight elimination.

DUBLIN, Ga. (WALB) - The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center and the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank of Macon are teaming up to give away food to area veterans.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at buildings 34/35 on the Dublin VAMC campus. Donations will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
“During this public health and economic crisis, I’m inspired with the Dublin VAMC employees, Middle Georgia Community Food Bank, and the selfless volunteers who go above and beyond so that veterans can receive wholesome, nutritious food,” said David Whitmer, medical center director. “Working with our community partners to help our veterans in need is consistent with our mission to serve those who have borne the battle and their families.”
Georgia Power announced a recent distribution of 8,000 energy efficiency kits from the companyâs Energy Efficiency Program to income-qualified customers across the state.
The company also announced a distribution of nearly 150,000 ENERGY STAR LEDs through partnering food bank facilities. The energy efficiency kits and LED bulbs will provide assistance through free energy efficiency upgrades designed to save customers money and make their homes more efficient.
The kits include items such as LED light bulbs, single pack heat shrink wrap window kit, switch and outlet gaskets, furnace filter, caulk gun and 100% silicone clear caulk, V-Seal weather strip, foam tape for windows and pipe insulation wrap.
