New Plymouth District Council pulls support for Taranaki composting business

Waste processing company Remediation NZ is disappointed New Plymouth District Council is withdrawing support for its North Taranaki Uruti waste disposal site.
New Plymouth’s household food waste will be trucked to a north Waikato facility for at least another two years after the district council pulled its support for a controversial Taranaki composting operation.
Since 2019 the district’s food scraps have been shipped 300km to Hampton Downs while the local processor Remediation NZ got its consents sorted to process the waste within the district at Uruti.
But the New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) has now shut the door on that plan and is withdrawing all support for the consents because of “serious environmental concerns” about the site. ....

The council wanted use the company to process its household food waste collection.
The council s group manager of planning and infrastructure David Langford said its submission supporting Remediation NZ was made two years ago when it was only aware of minor issues at the site.
We supported a regional organic waste processing facility as this was in line with our Zero Waste vision. But we were also clear that our support was conditional on the facility meeting environmental best practice standards and that any environmental impacts were minimised and properly managed.
Langford said more serious environmental concerns had been raised about the site over the past two years and it was clear the expected standards were not being met which was a major factor behind the council decision to transport food waste to Hampton Downs. ....

For many years it has suffered leaks into the stormwater system during heavy rainfall.
For two years the district council has warned against collecting shellfish and using the popular Urenui River mudflats after testing detected high levels of E coli bacteria.
This summer Ngāti Mutunga escalated those warnings with a rāhui on swimming, fishing and shellfish collecting in the river and estuary.
Ngāti Mutunga rūnanga kaitiaki Rodney Baker said replacing the current system was essential.
When will it be fixed? When will the sewerage be fixed?
NPDC infrastructure manager David Langford said Urenui was a top priority. ....
