Taranaki councils plan to build regional composting plant

The three district councils of Taranaki are planning to build a regional composting facility to stop food scraps being trucked out of the region.
New Plymouth is the only district council that currently collects and disposes of food waste, but it is having to truck it 300 kilometres north to Hampton Downs.
This is because the Remediation New Zealand-run facility in Uruti that the council planned to use when it launched food scrap recycling in September 2019 does not have resource consents.
The company has applied for consent renewal and is expecting a decision later in the month. ....

New Plymouth parking proposals put on hold after blowback

Sylvia Huitson, a counsellor, said she had been in the Powderham Business Centre for 12 years.
If someone was a client of hers, they could be suicidal, have post-traumatic stress disorder, or work at the hospital but see a counsellor on their lunch break, she said.
“You may have seen an accident or you may have been picking up body parts on the road.
“Parking four blocks away will cause a huge amount of added distress for a person who is already not coping.”
Infrastructure and planning manager David Langford told councillors they had “tried to find a balance between all of the competing needs of car parking in the CBD”. ....

More companies now reviewing support for Taranaki composting site

Waste management company Remediation NZ told a resource consent hearing it is trialling as new method to reduce hydrocarbon levels in drilling waste.
Support for the renewal of resource consents for a controversial composting site and worm farm in North Taranaki is now being reviewed by several major companies that used the site.
It is understood four companies which previously supported site owner Remediation NZ resource consent application to continue to process organic waste products at the Uruti site were now having second thoughts.
Remediation NZ applied to the Taranaki Regional Council to renew resource consents to discharge waste material, treated stormwater and leachate, and to discharge emissions into air from composting operations at the Uruti composting and vermiculture facility. ....

New Plymouth's $18m water meter plan still to be approved - council begins hiring process anyway

Public submissions on the draft long-term plan, which covers the 10 years to 2031, closed on April 6, and final council sign-off is needed by June 30.
Water meters are a controversial component of the plan, and though there is strong support among councillors for the proposal, councillor Dinnie Moeahu has expressed concerns about the idea and the Waitara Community Board is opposed to it.
However, the council appears to be expecting water meters to be approved, as on Monday it began advertising for a senior infrastructure project manager – universal water metering.
According to the advert, the successful candidate for the three-year, full-time job “will be the ‘face’ of the project and be able to bring together and lead a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts across council business units”. ....
