This weeks selection of photos comes from the Falmouth History Archive showcases a variety of events from 1974.
The selection begins in an artistic manner, Laurie Miller showing off her craftsmanship and a group of Australian women admiring a painting. We also catch a glimpse of the late David Mudd speaking in front of a packed out crowd. The Falmouthian was a Conservative MP here between 1970-72, and was a much respected member of the community.
The archives also offer us a chance to see the local community dressed to impress. Miss Benson and Hedges 1974, and a married couples Golden Wedding showcasing the people of Falmouth at their finest. ....

Book telling history of Falmouth in the 60s raising money for cancer charity
Falmouth life in the 1960s is the theme of the latest local history book written and published by retired Cornish journalist Mike Truscott in aid of Cancer Research UK.
It is the fifth in his series but the first to focus exclusively on how things were in a particular decade.
His chapters are accompanied by bespoke verse created by Penryn poet Nick Castle and the book is also notable for the final article for publication written by the late former local MP David Mudd.
David, an accomplished author, broadcaster, journalist and historian, wrote the chapter headed “Why Falmouth And The Sea Are In My Blood” shortly before he died in April last year. ....

In November, the Alexandria City School Board voted to change the name of T.C. Williams High School. After a series of polls among students, staff and the public, Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gregory Hutchings, Ed.D made the recommendation to the School Board to rename it Alexandria High School. The Board will vote on April 8 and the new name will be official on July 1.
Cost estimates by ACPS to implement the name change at T.C. Williams total about $325,000. Given the cost, choosing to name the school after the community and returning to the name of the city’s historic high school, until 1935, and not to name it for a person is a wise choice. ....

The site in Lotland Street, Inverness, has been deemed too risky for a proposed climbing centre.
Ambitious plans for a world-class climbing centre in Inverness have received a setback after the proposed location was deemed to be too risky.
The £3 million Ledge Climbing Gym was initially going to be built at Inverness Marina.
But due to delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic and financial uncertainty, project leaders put forward alternative plans instead to convert a warehouse in Lotland Street in the city’s Longman Industrial Estate. ....
