Trone launches re-election bid with long list of endorsements

Rep. David J. Trone (D), the businessman-turned-politician who represents Maryland’s westernmost congressional district, has decided not to run for governor next year.
Instead, he will seek a third term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Trone announced his decision in a media release on Friday morning. He is the second Democratic officeholder in as many days to opt not to enter the 2022 gubernatorial primary.
On Thursday, Baltimore County Executive Johnny A. Olszewski Jr. (D) announced that he will seek a second term in Towson. ....

It is far from an understatement to say that we are truly running out of time to take serious and bold action against the climate crisis. The disastrous effects of rising temperatures and sea levels are already being felt across Maryland, including prolonged and deadlier heatwaves, public health risks from pollution and the increased intensity of climate disasters.

What is more, these impacts are highly disproportionate along racial and socioeconomic lines – pollution-inflicted health disparities have become a reality in our state and nationwide, affecting overwhelmingly African-American communities. The COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis that has followed equally overburden our communities of color, and it is way past time that we act to correct these overlapping systems of climate and racial injustice. ....

Six delegates opposed because burden of proof is on landlord

Montgomery County landlords might have to provide just cause for evicting a tenant from a residential property if a state bill limiting eviction powers passes this year.
The Montgomery County Stable Homes Act would prohibit an eviction of a tenant holding over beyond the expiration of a lease in the absence of just cause. Landlords would be required to prove certain facts regarding the just cause of eviction.
Montgomery County’s 24 state delegates discussed the bill and others during a meeting Thursday morning for votes on whether to pursue, amend or withdraw them. ....
