New DTE program trains tree trimmers in Detroit Job-seekers unafraid of heights have a new opportunity to climb the career ladder starting with trees. DTE Energy Co. on Thursday introduced its new Tree Trim Academy in Detroit. The six-week program seeks to prepare workers, especially Detroiters, to become tree trimmers needed to help prevent power outages. Applicants apply through nonprofit Focus: HOPE for the program. It comes with no financial cost, and students earn a stipend of $50 per day for the first two weeks and $100 per day for the final four. The academy has graduated its first 10 students, nine of whom already have jobs lined up. The job can position workers for other employment in the industry, including overhead line work, at substations and more. ....
Kent nonprofit fighting food insecurity in need of new HQ The Socially Responsible Sweatshop of Kent is calling on the community to help it continue its work. The group, founded in 2013, repurposes scrap fabric into usable goods, which it then sells. The nonprofit organization protects the environment by keeping thousands of pounds of linen out of landfills annually and all of the money garnered from sales of its products are used in Kent and surrounding communities to fight food insecurity. The group is currently headquartered in the former Franklin Elementary School building on Route 43 in Kent. It was first invited to use the building in July 2020 after SRS made and donated a significant amount of cotton facial masks to the school district. However, the Kent School District has given the property to Davey Tree Expert Co. in exchange for property behind Stanton Middle School. A medical marijuana company has begun steps to open a dispensary on the west side of Kent and will go before the city s Planning Commission tonight seeking a site plan review and a conditional zoning certificate. Buckeye Relief, is a level I medical marijuana cultivator and processor based in Eastlake. While its products can be found in dispensaries across the state, Caroline Henry, Buckeye Relief s government affairs director, said the company is interesting in opening its own facility at 1181 W. Main St. Henry said the spot is ideal because of its spacious building and ample parking. She said that clientele sometimes have a hard time finding parking around dispensaries and, because many of the people using dispensaries are disabled, more parking is always good. ....
