Kent nonprofit fighting food insecurity in need of new HQ

Kent nonprofit fighting food insecurity in need of new HQ The Socially Responsible Sweatshop of Kent is calling on the community to help it continue its work. The group, founded in 2013, repurposes scrap fabric into usable goods, which it then sells. The nonprofit organization protects the environment by keeping thousands of pounds of linen out of landfills annually and all of the money garnered from sales of its products are used in Kent and surrounding communities to fight food insecurity. The group is currently headquartered in the former Franklin Elementary School building on Route 43 in Kent. It was first invited to use the building in July 2020 after SRS made and donated a significant amount of cotton facial masks to the school district. However, the Kent School District has given the property to Davey Tree Expert Co. in exchange for property behind Stanton Middle School. The deal means the workshop s approximately 60 volunteers must find a new home to do their work.
