COVID fill-in Army takes on West Virginia in Liberty Bowl


WHAT’S AT STAKE
Army is playing West Virginia in the Liberty Bowl thanks to Tennessee’s withdrawal because of COVID-19 issues. Army can notch its third season with double-digit victories in Jeff Monken’s seven years as head coach. The senior class already has an academy-record 35 wins. Without Monken, only one other Army team has a 10-win season. West Virginia is in its 38th bowl all-time, and the Mountaineers could win their first game this season away from Morgantown this season.
KEY MATCHUP
The Army triple option against the West Virginia defense. The Black Knights are averaging 281.3 yards rushing per game to rank fourth nationally and have scored 33 touchdowns on the ground, two behind national co-leaders Alabama and North Carolina. The Mountaineers rank 24th nationally against the run, allowing 126.2 yards per game and eight rushing touchdowns this season. ....

Darius Stills becomes WVU's 11th AP All-America 1st team selection

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. Fairmont Senior High School graduate Darius Stills has been named a AP All-America first team selection in his senior season with the Mountaineers.
The Big 12 Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year has also been named a first team All-America pick by USA Today, Bleacher Report and ESPN. Stills becomes the first Mountaineer to earn AP top recognition since Tavon Austin was honored in 2012.
Stills finished the 2020 regular season with 22 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss and an interception. He also registered 10.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss over the past two seasons. ....

MORGANTOWN – West Virginia University senior defensive tackle Darius Stills and sophomore spear Tykee Smith were named to the Associated Press All-America First and Third Teams, respectively, as announced by the organization.

WVU's last challenge of 2020 is a unique one as Army awaits in the Liberty Bowl

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. In a typical season, which 2020 certainly has not been, bowl games provide the largest window of opportunity to prepare for an opponent outside of the season opener. When West Virginia faces Army in the Liberty Bowl Thursday afternoon in Memphis, the Mountaineers will have had about ten days to gear up for one of the truly unique offenses in college football.
The Black Knights (9-2) employ an option offense to produce the fourth-best rushing attack in the country (281.3 yards per game). Only Alabama, North Carolina and BYU have rushed for more scores (33) than Army. In an era of uptempo spread offenses, Army’s old-school offense presents the Mountaineers with several new challenges. ....
