Army seeks tenth win to cap one of the best seasons in program history By December 31, 2020 - 6:00 am Dec 12, 2020; West Point, New York, USA; Army Black Knights kicker Quinn Maretzki (29) celebrates his field goal during the second half of the Army-Navy game at Michie Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Danny Wild-USA TODAY Sports MORGANTOWN, W.Va. The winningest class in the history of the Army football program will cap their careers later today in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl against West Virginia. Shortly after bowl bids were announced in mass on December 20, the Black Knights, despite their 9-2 record, were denied a bid. As an FBS independent, the lack of a conference tie-in and the cancellation of their original game in the Independence Bowl left Army on the sidelines while schools like Tennessee (3-7) and South Carolina (2-8) received bids. COVID cases on the UT roster opened the door for Army to face the Mountaineers. ....
The Associated Press Count West Virginia coach Neal Brown among those wanting to see Army play a bowl game. He will get the chance when his Mountaineers take on Army in the Liberty Bowl after the Black Knights were tapped as a COVID-19 replacement for Tennessee. Brown sees this as a big opportunity for West Virginia. “It’s maybe going to be the most watched bowl game outside the national semifinals,” Brown said. “And I understand, and our kids understand, there probably won’t be a whole lot of people outside the state of West Virginia pulling for us. It’s going to be a fun afternoon.” ....

(Neal Brown pregame Zoom conference) MORGANTOWN, W.Va. In a typical season, which 2020 certainly has not been, bowl games provide the largest window of opportunity to prepare for an opponent outside of the season opener. When West Virginia faces Army in the Liberty Bowl Thursday afternoon in Memphis, the Mountaineers will have had about ten days to gear up for one of the truly unique offenses in college football. The Black Knights (9-2) employ an option offense to produce the fourth-best rushing attack in the country (281.3 yards per game). Only Alabama, North Carolina and BYU have rushed for more scores (33) than Army. In an era of uptempo spread offenses, Army’s old-school offense presents the Mountaineers with several new challenges. ....
CIC Title Game Revisited Share this story It’s been over a month since I wrote my preview of the CIC Title game match between the Falcons and the Black Knights of Army, and after the cancellation of the original game, both teams have played a few more games that have given everyone a chance to get a better handle on each teams strengths and weaknesses. With the new observations in mind, my new analysis is presented for your approval. Army comes into the game with a record of 8-2, with losses only to 7th ranked Cincinnati and 6-5 Tulane. The rest of Army’s schedule has not been terribly grueling. The only wins they have against winning FBS teams are 28-27 over a 7-5 Georgia Southern team and 28-16 over a 7-4 UTSA team. Head Coach Jeff Monken emphasizes a tough, physical defense, and Army has a good one this year. Led by a strong front seven, the Black Knights have accumulated 62 tackles for a loss, 16 sacks and 12 QB hurries, and give up 14.7 points per game. T ....
