Man with diverse criminal background sentenced for Morton County scam


A Bottineau man in state custody for repeatedly raping a young girl several years ago was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years behind bars in a separate federal case after pleading guilty to bilking a Morton County family out of more than $500,000.
The criminal background of Shawn Miller also includes impersonating a military pilot and scamming free commercial airline flights for years. One member of the scammed family referred to Miller in court as Exhibit A refusing to say his name  and told him  Your imaginary life was real to us.
Miller, 44, in 2014 and 2015 told the Morton County family he was wealthy, had a background as a CIA employee and could help them double or triple their investments, according to a federal indictment. He also allegedly gave them what he called “healing medicine” that was actually methamphetamine to better persuade them that he had the qualities he claimed. ....

Law officers in Morton County on Monday afternoon are set to detonate munitions as part of the evidence-exchanging process in a federal lawsuit filed by a Dakota Access Pipeline protester who claims police targeted her with a concussion grenade.
Attorneys for Sophia Wilansky, of New York, have been jockeying over evidence for months with attorneys for the county and officers who were part of the law enforcement response to the DAPL protests in south central North Dakota in 2016-17.
The two sides agreed during a March 16 conference that Morton County will procure at Wilansky’s expense up to five munitions and deploy them in the presence of an expert hired by Wilansky. The initial date of April 6 was later moved to May 3, according to an order filed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Alice Senechal. ....

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) Munitions were expected to be detonated Monday as attorneys attempt to gather evidence in a federal lawsuit by a Dakota Access pipeline protester who was injured in a skirmish with law enforcement officers during the height of demonstrations against the pipeline.
Sophia Wilansky claims police targeted her with a concussion grenade as law enforcement tried to prevent protesters from breaching a blocked highway bridge near their main encampment in November 2016 in south central North Dakota. Demonstrators were turned back by officers who used tear gas among other things. ....

FARGO A 41-year-old man will spend 30 years in federal prison for beating another man to death and dumping his body in a set of trees.
Gary Vivier, who is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, sat quietly Friday, April 16, as U.S. District Judge Daniel Traynor handed down the 360-month sentence in Fargo. Vivier, who faced life in prison, pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge on Nov. 17, exactly three years after he killed Nicholas Alexander-Lee McCray in Belcourt, N.D. ....
