Man with diverse criminal background sentenced for Morton County scam


A Bottineau man in state custody for repeatedly raping a young girl several years ago was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years behind bars in a separate federal case after pleading guilty to bilking a Morton County family out of more than $500,000.
The criminal background of Shawn Miller also includes impersonating a military pilot and scamming free commercial airline flights for years. One member of the scammed family referred to Miller in court as Exhibit A refusing to say his name  and told him  Your imaginary life was real to us.
Miller, 44, in 2014 and 2015 told the Morton County family he was wealthy, had a background as a CIA employee and could help them double or triple their investments, according to a federal indictment. He also allegedly gave them what he called “healing medicine” that was actually methamphetamine to better persuade them that he had the qualities he claimed. ....

Appeals court rules in favor of Watford City accountant convicted of wire fraud


A federal appeals court has ordered a judge to dismiss the wire fraud conviction of a Watford City accountant who was indirectly linked to a man convicted in an oil boom murder-for-hire scheme.
The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Rene L. Johnson s right to a speedy trial was violated.
Johnson in November 2018 was found guilty of wire fraud but not guilty of three other charges. One of her clients was James Henrikson, who was found guilty of ordering two deaths in a murder-for-hire plot. Johnson provided a $400,000 loan to one of the men who was later killed, under the promise ....

Former oil field manager pleads guilty in connection with OSHA investigation | News, Sports, Jobs

A Montana man pleaded guilty in federal court in the District of North Dakota to a felony charge of obstructing an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) proceeding stemming from the 2014 death of an oil field worker in Williston, according to information provided by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Stephan Todd Reisinger, 50, of Kalispell, was a maintenance manager at Nabors Completion and Production Services Company (NCPS) at its Williston facility. He supervised approximately 40 employees, including 28-year old U.S. Marine Corps veteran Dustin Payne. On Oct. 3, 2014, Payne welded on an uncleaned tanker trailer that had previously carried “produced water,” a liquid waste that is generated by oil wells and which contains flammable chemicals. The tank exploded and Payne was fatally injured. ....
