Sammy Sasso was a single takedown away from winning the Big Ten Championship as a redshirt freshman, dropping a 2-1 classic to Iowa s Pat Lugo a year ago. The sport s Freshman of the Year had a fantastic season, and until COVID scuttled everything appeared on track to challenge Lugo for an NCAA title. That match, of course, never happened. But after the strangest offseason in memory, Sasso entered a condensed Big Ten season poised to be the man to beat in 2021. And he s lived up to the billing every step of the way, winning the 149-pound Big Ten Championship Sunday in State College, Penn., defeating Nebraska s Ridge Lovett in a 5-2 decision. ....
Penn State wrestling is set to host the Big Ten Wrestling Championships in the Bryce Jordan Center this weekend. Although Cael Sanderson’s squad is heading into the tournament relying on youth, the Nittany Lions will have a good chance to qualify a wrestler in every weight class for the upcoming NCAA Championships to be held March 18-20 in St. Louis. Here’s how the Nittany Lion grapplers could fare heading into the weekend: At 125 pounds, true freshman Robert Howard has a shot at being a bracket-buster. Howard is currently listed as the 11th seed at the weight in the final seeds announced on Friday. The young freshman holds a 2-1 record on the year, but he’s someone that you don’t want to wrestle in the opening rounds of the tournament. He opens against No. 6 seed Eric Barnett of Wisconsin. Howard wasn’t cleared to wrestle when the Nittany Lions and Badgers met in February. ....
Photo by Hunter Martin/Getty Images As a note, all rankings are courtesy of Intermat, who do a good job and don’t charge me money to view them. Team rankings are dual rankings, not tournament. Should Iowa be wary of a slow start coming off of covid pause? That’s more or less what Kind of. asked me after Michigan lost to Penn State on Sunday. Well, yes and no. Penn State came off their pause by losing a couple big matches to Indiana wrestlers (need I say more?), and Michigan looked pretty slow this weekend against a good and a very good team. So why should Iowa be the exception? Well, first, they’re older. They’ve been here before, and they know exactly how to prepare. Seriously, this team is starting six seniors and two juniors. They’re also very driven. Eight of those ten starters had All-American or better hopes, and dreams of team title, cut short this time last year. That’s not to say everyone isn’t driven, but Iowa hasn’t won a title in way too long, a ....
Iowa City Press-Citizen-USA TODAY NETWORK 3/2: The Big Ten official pre-seeds were released after this article was published. For this weight, in order, they are: Eierman (IA), Lee (PSU), Rivera (RU), Red (NE), Duncan (ILL), Polanco (MN), D’Emilio (OSU), Mattin (MI), Filius (PU), Rooks (IU), Bertoni (MD), Santos (MSU), Valdiviez (NW), Dentino (UW) The Big Ten will send its champion along with the next seven wrestlers at 141 pounds into the NCAAs, and others will have a shot at one of six remaining at-large bids. The Big Ten is incredibly strong at this weight, with three of the top five in the Intermat poll, and four of the top five in the National Wrestling Coaches Association coaches ranking. It includes three unbeaten wrestlers in #1 Jaydin Eierman, #2 Nick Lee, and #4 Sebastian Rivera. They are listed in what I expect to be their seeding order. ....
No. 3 Penn State wrestling (6-0) remained undefeated on the year with a 44-0 win against Maryland (0-8) on Monday Night in Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions managed to give up only two takedowns in the Senior Night dual meet and scored 14 bonus points as a team. Redshirt freshman Greg Kerkvliet won by fall in his debut for the Nittany Lions, a little less than two weeks after coach Cael Sanderson said he didn’t expect the heavyweight to compete this year. Luke Gardner also picked up a victory in his final match in Rec Hall. How It Happened The dual meet started off at heavyweight with Greg Kerkvliet making his dual meet debut for the Nittany Lions against Garrett Kappes of Maryland. Kerkvliet wasted no time getting started. He scored three takedowns within the first minute of the match and locked up a cradle to earn the first period fall. Kervliet’s quick pin start put the Nitanny Lions up 6-0. ....
