Scotland’s first alcohol and drugs boss with “lived experience” of addiction says the entire approach to substance misuse must change to halt the rise in deaths.
Dermot Craig has been named the new deputy chairman of Aberdeen City Alcohol & Drugs Partnership (ADP) – with his appointment thought to be the first of its kind in Scotland.
But he says too much focus has been placed on the “tip of the iceberg” and is calling for more attention to be given to the many underlying issues at hand.
Earlier this year health chiefs issued an urgent warning when “upwards of 10 suspected deaths” from drugs took place in Aberdeen in the space of just a few weeks. ....

Aberdeen in Recovery (AiR) has launched a new weekly rolling timetable – providing more than 60 hours of free groups events and training for individuals looking to recover from addiction.
The registered charity – which is the first nationally recognised Lived Experience Recovery Organisation (LERO) in the North East – had initially hoped to launch the new timetable and accompanying programme last year but had to postpone this twice because of Covid-19 restrictions. ....

Aberdeen alcohol and drug recovery charities urge people to stay safe over festive season

Two Aberdeen charities supporting people with drug and alcohol problems have issued advice on staying safe during the festive season.
In a joint message, they said: “We are certainly not in the business of telling others what to do nor do we make judgements on their behaviour.
“This is not what we are about and if we were to do so we would be going against the recovery principle of ‘respecting the individual’s right of accountability and choice’ that we embrace and encourage others to adopt and action in their lives. ....
