Long-time Daytona Beach Activist To Be Honored Saturday

Daytona Beach, FL – A naming ceremony is set to commemorate long-time Daytona Beach community activist Norma Bland this Saturday at 11 a.m. The new multipurpose field at Derbyshire Park will be named the “Norma J. Bland Football & Soccer Field.” Mrs. Bland passed away due to COVID-19 in July 2020. On February 3, 2021, the Daytona Beach City Commission unanimously passed the request to name the field after her. The city of Daytona Beach issued a memorandum with Mrs. Bland’s biography and accomplishments which can be seen at codb.us. Daytona Beach, FL - The City of Daytona Beach is set to dedicate a multipurpose field to Norma Bland, a local activist and champion of Daytona Beach s African-American community. According to an agenda item for the Daytona Beach City Commission s upcoming February 3rd meeting, the request—made by Zone 5 Commissioner Dannette Henry—is to rename a newly renovated field at Derbyshire Park the Norma J. Bland Football & Soccer Field in honor of Bland s contributions to the city and its African-American community. Bland was born in Daytona Beach in 1949 and graduated from the all-black Campbell Senior High School in 1967, just two years before the school ceased operations—a year before Volusia County schools integrated. When Bland was 65, she earned her Associates of Arts degree from Daytona State College before earning her bachelor s degree a year later from the same school. Derbyshire Park Shooting Suspect Arrested

Daytona Beach, FL - A suspect wanted in the death of a 19-year-old who was shot in broad daylight at a public park has been arrested by police. 31-year-old Arrington Turner s arrest was confirmed via an email from the Daytona Beach Police Department, who reports that Turner was arrested on Monday (December 28th). Turner was one of two suspects that officers were looking for following a shooting that claimed the life of 19-year-old John Phillips. Police say Turner and another suspect found Phillips on a basketball court at Derbyshire Park and shot him multiple times before fleeing northbound. Phillips was later pronounced dead at Halifax Health Medical Center. While a motive for the shooting is still unclear, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young stated that witnesses said the shooting could have stemmed from an argument over a female. There was no altercation before the shooting occurred. ....

This evening in DeLand, Santa will lead a parade beginning at 6 p.m. on Minnesota Avenue, west of State Road 15-A. He’ll lead another tomorrow beginning on South Stone Street.
