Fernandez Sr. has been awarded a grant through the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) that will allow him to create a documentary about COVID-19 and its impact on the Black community in Daytona Beach and beyond. The funding from NABJ is supporting journalists at Black-owned media outlets through the organizationâs âBlack Press Grant Program.â The program is supported by a $300,000 grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). NABJ is an organization of 4,000 journalists, students, media-related professionals and educators. It aims to provide innovative, quality programs and services on behalf of Black Journalists worldwide. ....
Jun 10, 2021 | 11:27 AM Daytona Beach, FL – A naming ceremony is set to commemorate long-time Daytona Beach community activist Norma Bland this Saturday at 11 a.m. The new multipurpose field at Derbyshire Park will be named the “Norma J. Bland Football & Soccer Field.” Mrs. Bland passed away due to COVID-19 in July 2020. On February 3, 2021, the Daytona Beach City Commission unanimously passed the request to name the field after her. The city of Daytona Beach issued a memorandum with Mrs. Bland’s biography and accomplishments which can be seen at codb.us. City To Dedicate Field To Late Local Activist A number of local dignitaries will speak during the ceremony, including Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, city commissioners Paula Reed and Danette Henry, and Daytona Beach NAACP President Cynthia Slater. ....

According to an agenda item for the Daytona Beach City Commission s upcoming February 3rd meeting, the request—made by Zone 5 Commissioner Dannette Henry—is to rename a newly renovated field at Derbyshire Park the Norma J. Bland Football & Soccer Field in honor of Bland s contributions to the city and its African-American community. Bland was born in Daytona Beach in 1949 and graduated from the all-black Campbell Senior High School in 1967, just two years before the school ceased operations—a year before Volusia County schools integrated. When Bland was 65, she earned her Associates of Arts degree from Daytona State College before earning her bachelor s degree a year later from the same school. Nationally, the death total that approached 334,000 as New Year s week began already dwarfed the casualties of such historic events as the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Pearl Harbor and the Vietnam War. In Florida, the virus has accounted for the deaths of more than 21,300 Florida residents, a figure that doesn t include more than 300 non-resident deaths.
