Noosa Council has been accused of an unnecessary money grab in its proposed laws to crack down on the short stay accommodation industry.
More than 200 Noosa airbnb hosts and businesspeople met on Monday night to raise concerns with proposed local laws for holiday homes and rentals.
It proposes new rules for property owners including that they apply for annual registration, keep a record of complaints and have a manager who lives within 20 minutes of the home or unit.
Home hosts – residents who let out empty rooms while they are still living in the property – will also be affected with a new requirement to register their homes annually. ....

Airbnb executives will be in Noosa next week to highlight their concerns with the controversial proposed rules for holiday homes and units.
Noosa Council is calling for public comments on a draft strategy aimed at cracking down on the short stay accommodation industry.
It proposes new rules for property owners including that they apply for annual registration, keep a record of complaints and have a manager who lives within 20 minutes of the home or unit.

The government has ruled out statewide regulations on the short-stay accommodation industry as Noosa Council forges ahead with its own rules.
Noosa Council’s draft local law to regulate the operation of properties offered up as holiday rentals and home share sets out that managers of these properties must live within 20 minutes and address complaints within 30 minutes.
They would also need to register the property annually.
Airbnb head of public policy for Australia Derek Nolan said the council failed to get the balance right between the needs of hosts, guests, and residents.
“The proposed rules are effectively an assault on tourism in the region that would harm jobs and local businesses and hamper economic recovery at a critical juncture,” Mr Nolan said. ....
