Three First Nation economic organizations, including the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Kitsaki Management, have signed an agreement to jointly pursue small nuclear modular reactor investments. “We just think we want to be part of this discussion and look at it as a strong business opportunity going forward,” said Sean Willy, the CEO of Des Nedhe Group, but who was also speaking on behalf of Athabasca Basin Development and Kitsaki. “Whenever they deploy these small modular reactors (SMR), wherever in Canada, hopefully the uranium they use comes from northern Saskatchewan.” Willy explained now is an ideal time to sign a memorandum of understanding between the three groups because SMR development is being discussed by the provincial governments of Alberta, New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan. He noted it will be important First Nations, Métis and Inuit people be involved in those talks when the time comes. ....
From La Ronge: Get To Know Us is an upcoming art exhibit to be hosted by Saskatchewan’s Government House. It will feature 33 pieces from 19 artists from Air Ronge, La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. The exhibit was organized by the La Ronge Arts Council and member Caron Dubnick said it was a chance for Saskatchewan residents to get to know the tri-communities a little better. “It’s an opportunity for La Ronge artists to reach a wider audience, but our premise at the beginning of this was to celebrate the fact one of our local boys, Russell Mirasty, was named as the lieutenant governor,” she said. “It’s an achievement for him personally, but it’s an achievement for northerners because he’s an Aboriginal person from the North and he has been honoured with this position. The federal government has announced a $17 million investment to the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) for the immediate construction of 84 units of affordable homes for First Nations in Saskatchewan.
