Cook-Searson recipient of national Indigenous leadership award

Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) Chief Tammy Cook-Searson is the recipient of the 2021 Indigenous Women in Leadership Award.
The honour was announced Monday by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) and it marks the fifth time the award has been bestowed. Cook-Searson, who has been chief of the LLRIB since 2005, said she was grateful to be this year’s recipient.
“It’s a national award and there were many other deserving recipients who were also nominated,” she said. “I give credit to everyone who I had the privilege to work with over the years. Nobody does anything by their self and it’s always a team effort and a collective effort collaborating with others to make things better for our communities.” ....

A.C. Forestry inks deal with Carrier Forest Products

A.C. Forestry has signed a major forestry agreement with Carrier Forest Products.
According to Agency Chiefs Tribal Council CEO Ken Thomas, the agreement allows Carrier to receive softwood saw log timber from the Sakaw Askiy Management area located near Big River. The allocation is part of the former Prince Albert Pulp Mill’s forest management area as it was split up between Carrier, Montreal Lake and Tolko.
“We got one of the best pieces, which is an area from Dore Lake to Meadow Lake and over to Big River and back down to Spiritwood where our office is located,” Thomas said. “It’s about 1.5 million acres and that allows us to cut up to 400,000 cubic meters per year. Half of it is softwood and half of it is hardwood.” ....

La Loche volunteers rescue stranded semi-truck driver

Residents of La Loche banded together to rescue a semi-truck driver after he became stranded between their community and Fort McMurray.
It was on Monday when Brenda Kokan-Janvier and her husband found the man, who was stuck along Highway 956 at Christina River Crossing. They were travelling to Fort McMurray to purchase renovation supplies but were unable to help the driver, because it wasn’t possible with just their vehicle alone.

The stretch of road he became stuck on connects Alberta and Saskatchewan and is closed during the summer. There is a weight restriction at the crossing, but Kokan-Janvier noted there is no sign in the area warning motorists of one. ....
