Michelle Owens, a veteran tourism marketer with long-standing ties to Western North Carolina, has been named executive director of the Henderson County Tourism Development Authority. Owens brings nearly two decades of marketing and tourism experience to her new role, including six years as executive director of the Rutherford County TDA from 2009 to 2015. She emerged from a field of 40 applicants to fill the opening created by the retirement of Beth Carden on March 31. Owens takes the helm at a time of robust tourism activity in Hendersonville and Henderson County. New hotels and attractions are opening, and the county ranks 14th out of 100 counties in North Carolina with annual visitor spending of nearly $325 million. ....
Garden Jubilee to combine Main Street vendors, countryside tour for 2021 event From staff reports Hendersonville’s garden extravaganza this Memorial Day weekend will combine vendors and activities on Main Street with the popular pivot last year to countryside tours of nurseries and orchards. Last May, the event was renamed Garden Jubilee Nurseries & Orchards Tour and shifted from a downtown gathering to a countryside tour of nurseries and orchards. Brought about by the pandemic, the change received overwhelming approval, organizers said in a news release. Main Street is back as a venue this year, scaled down for social distancing, and will be held in tandem with the countryside tours. ....
Last May, the event was renamed Garden Jubilee Nurseries & Orchards Tour and shifted from a downtown gathering to a countryside tour of nurseries and orchards. Brought about by the pandemic, the change received overwhelming approval. The 2021 Garden Jubilee Nurseries & Orchards Tour combines both worlds by blending the tour concept with a revamped Main Street experience scaled back for social distancing. This new town-and-country format takes place Friday to Sunday, May 28-30, with the downtown portion available Saturday and Sunday. Main Street will be considered one of 15 stops on the tour. “People loved the tour aspect last year, and we think it will be more appealing this year when combined with the traditional downtown experience,” says Karen Baker, Henderson County’s assistant tourism director. “Folks can start anywhere on the tour they wish. This spreads things out across multiple venues, as opposed to everyone congregating downtown.” ....
The Henderson County Health Department reported 92 Covid-19 related deaths since the first coronavirus death last March. Of the 1,563 deaths, the coronavirus accounted for 6 percent of the total or one death in seventeen. According to a recent CDC report, in 94 percent of Covid-19 deaths, an underlying medical condition such as diabetes, respiratory failure or cardiac arrest was a contributing factor. While I was pulling death figures, I looked at the average number of deaths in the county for the past three years (1,525 per year) and compared that to the comparable number of births (916). At the rate of 609 more deaths than births each year one can surmise that eventually there would be no one left alive in the county. But we of course have the in-migration factor. So although more residents are passing away than new ones being born, our county still grows at the annual clip of 1.3 percent. That’s more “little pink houses for you and me.” ....
