Fugitives who have fled overseas under charges related to national security will be pursued for life under the national security law for Hong Kong, John Lee, the Secretary for Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, warned on Wednesday.
In a Cable TV interview, Lee said that the fugitives, who are currently “protected” by foreign governments, will become disposable when they are of no political value, and will be pursued for the rest of their lives by the Hong Kong police.  ....

Ex-Hong Kong Lawmaker, Held Under Security Law, Gets Bail for Father's Funeral

Ex-Hong Kong Lawmaker, Held Under Security Law, Gets Bail for Father’s Funeral
HONG KONG A Hong Kong court on Friday granted emergency bail to former Democratic Party leader Wu Chi-Wai, detained on charges of breaking the city’s national security law, so he can attend his father’s funeral, the South China Morning Post reported.
Wu is among 47 opposition figures charged with conspiracy to commit subversion by participating in an unofficial, non-binding and independently organised primary vote last year to select candidates for a since-postponed city election.
Authorities said the vote was a “vicious plot” to “overthrow the government,” which falls under a national security law that Beijing imposed on the former British colony in July 2020. Most of the 47 have been denied bail. ....

Terry Glavin: The obscene, unpardonable death of democratic reform in Hong Kong

Article content
Do not split.
Out of the disunity and fractious tensions that followed the failure of the 2014 Umbrella Movement protests, that was the one slogan that kept Hongkongers united in a multi-faceted agitation for democratic reform that brought millions of people into the streets of the former British colony, starting two summers ago.
