Hong Kong Judge Draws Criticism After Court Session Involving 47 Pro-Democracy Activists

Hong Kong Judge Draws Criticism After Court Session Involving 47 Pro-Democracy Activists An internationally scrutinized court case unfolded in Hong Kong on May 31, when 47 pro-democracy opposition figures stood before a judge, while being charged with conspiracy to commit subversion under the city’s draconian national security law. At the West Kowloon court building, Judge Victor So ruled that the court case will resume on July 8, with the possibility that the case will be transferred to the High Court, which has the power to hand out heavier sentences. The judge also rejected the bail application of one of the defendants former district counselor Tiffany Yuen.

Ex-Hong Kong Lawmaker, Held Under Security Law, Gets Bail for Father s Funeral

Ex-Hong Kong Lawmaker, Held Under Security Law, Gets Bail for Father’s Funeral HONG KONG A Hong Kong court on Friday granted emergency bail to former Democratic Party leader Wu Chi-Wai, detained on charges of breaking the city’s national security law, so he can attend his father’s funeral, the South China Morning Post reported. Wu is among 47 opposition figures charged with conspiracy to commit subversion by participating in an unofficial, non-binding and independently organised primary vote last year to select candidates for a since-postponed city election. Authorities said the vote was a “vicious plot” to “overthrow the government,” which falls under a national security law that Beijing imposed on the former British colony in July 2020. Most of the 47 have been denied bail.
