Home Depot Guarded on Future Demand After Bumper First-Quarter Sales
Home Depot on Tuesday cautioned it was difficult to predict how its business would be impacted by a potential change in shopping habits in the coming months as the reopening of the U.S. economy threatens to slow a pandemic-fueled sales boom.
The lack of a solid forecast from the top U.S. home improvement retailer, which benefited in the last year from a strengthening housing market, came as data showed homebuilding fell more than expected in April, likely pulled down by soaring prices for lumber and other materials.
Supply shortages and surging demand have caused lumber prices to more than triple in the past year, helping buoy sales at Home Depot but hitting its margins. ....

Only one Metrobus depot operating in Joburg as strike intensifies

The Metrobus strike has intensified, with only one depot operating in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Drivers affiliated to the Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers Union of SA (Demawusa) embarked on a strike on Monday.
Demawusa spokesperson Dion Makhura said members had downed tools because their employer had refused to concede to demands which included an 18% salary increase and a call for the company to address allegations of corruption.
Two depots were operating when the strike disrupted operations in certain areas on Monday. ....

Tensions continued to mount among Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt ahead of Addis Ababa’s planned second unilateral filling of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in coming months. In apparent warning to Addis Ababa and preparation for possible escalation of inter-state tensions, Sudan and Egypt 31 March-5 April held second joint military exercise since Nov 2020. New round of talks among Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan on filling and operation of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on Blue Nile river broke down 6 April. Cairo same day denounced Ethiopia’s “lack of political will to negotiate in good faith”, while Khartoum vowed to “consider all possible options to protect its security”, denouncing Addis Ababa’s rejection of its proposal for quadripartite mediation by AU, EU, UN and U.S. to break deadlock in AU-led negotiations. Ethiopia’s water minister Seleshi Bekele 7 April said Addis Ababa would proceed with second filling of dam during forthcoming rainy seas ....
