‘Very serious crash’ reported Wednesday night

SHADYSIDE Authorities closed the north and southbound lanes of Ohio 7 late Wednesday in the wake of what a dispatcher termed a “very serious crash.”
An Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatcher confirmed shortly before 11 p.m. that a crash had occurred on the highway between Bellaire and Shadyside. She said the accident was reported at 10:22 p.m. and, to her knowledge, involved two vehicles. She said Ohio 7 was closed in both directions as a result but declined to provide more information, noting the incident was still under investigation.
Numerous unconfirmed reports indicated that a fatality resulted from the crash. Some witnesses told our staff that a medical helicopter was brought to the scene. Those individuals also indicated that the OR&W Fire District responded, along with the Bellaire Police Department and the patrol. Bellaire Police Chief Dick Flanagan could not be reached for comment by press ....

(File Photo/Shelley Hanson) A couple of the old red parking meters that were replaced in the village of Bellaire’s downtown a couple years ago. Village Council on Thursday voted to do away with its parking meters and instead start chalking tires.
BELLAIRE Village Council voted to do away with its parking meters and instead move to chalking tires in its business district.
During a regular meeting Thursday, council voted 4-3 to get rid of the parking meters, which have been the topic of much discussion and debate over the years. Voting in favor of removal were Jerry Olack, Elizabeth Dugmore, Donnie Maupin and Mayor Vince DiFabrizio. Opposed were Jerry Fisher, Nikki Liberatore and Michael Doyle. ....

BELLAIRE Village Council wrapped up its 2020 year-end finances this week and also mulled issues related to its Law Enforcement Trust Fund.
Village Solicitor Michael Shaheen on Wednesday said council is trying to determine the best course of action related to recent Ohio Auditor’s Office findings against Police Chief Dick Flanagan and former police officer Michael Wheeler.
The audit findings included claims that money, about $23,000 total, is owed to the fund. The state auditor’s office maintains the money should be repaid by Flanagan and Wheeler, who allegedly owe $15,603 and $7,835, respectively, for “unsupported expenditures” made from the fund over the course of a few years. Flanagan was a lieutenant during those years. ....

BELLAIRE –Â A roadside relic is being razed in the village of Bellaire.
The former 7 Inn, located in the 1600 block of Belmont Street, is being demolished after many years of sitting empty and neglected.
Dick Flanagan, chief of the Bellaire Police Department and codes enforcer, said he was set to speak with the property owner on Monday about the former motel.
“I’m meeting with the owner this afternoon. It’s going to be razed all at the owner’s expense,” he said. ....

BELLAIRE A roadside relic is being razed in the village of Bellaire.
The former 7 Inn, located in the 1600 block of Belmont Street, is being demolished after many years of sitting empty and neglected.
Dick Flanagan, chief of the Bellaire Police Department and village codes enforcer, said he was set to speak with the property owner on Monday about the former motel.
“I’m meeting with the owner this afternoon. It’s going to be razed all at the owner’s expense,” he said.
Since taking over the codes enforcement duties in 2017, Flanagan has worked to get ruined properties either razed or repaired in the village. Dozens of dilapidated houses have been razed, mostly by the owners themselves since Flanagan took over the position. ....
