Last year, nearly 80% of USD 309 voters rejected a $29.9 million bond issue, but today, money is still needed for big repairs. During last week s board meeting, School Board President Dan Schweizer brought up the bond issue once again. He did not support last year s bond, saying it was too large a sum for the community. But this time, he said, the board and the schools need to prioritize. Schweizer said the bond needs to be much smaller and the length of time covered needs to be shorter, which would reduce interest paid. He wants to ask each principal for their top ten list of needs and prioritize those needs, saying one school might get three needs met, while another might only get one. ....
For the newly-named superintendent of Nickerson-South Hutchinson Schools, life is what you make of it. Along with his suit and tie job of running a high school in Bennington, Curtis Nightingale is a musician. While attending Newton High School, he played the cornet in band and participated in musical theater, but it was in college where he realized his passion for the bass guitar and his love for several types of contemporary music – from 1950s and 60s classics to blues to heavy metal. “It was the guitar that struck me,” Nightingale said. Nightingale performs in three bands, singing as the lead in a blues band and performing backup vocals in two other groups. Just recently, one of his bands, Bootleg Mercy, released a single and will soon release an album. The four musicians worked together to write, perform and record their original tunes. ....
