In January 2020, I wrote for Slate about the experience of reading
The Absolute Book, an epic fantasy by the Wellington, New Zealand writer Elizabeth Knox. The book seemed so remarkable and so marketable that I couldn’t believe it had no American publisher, so I gave my piece the puckish headline “This New Zealand Fantasy Masterpiece Needs to Be Published in America, Like, Now.” Much to my delight, the essay worked, and on Tuesday the American edition of ....

What Happened Was sequel: interview with Tom Noonan.

Tom Noonan’s 1994 independent movie
What Happened Was … isn’t your typical romance, though it puts two lonely people together on their first date. (They’re played by Noonan best known as the villain in thrillers like
Manhunter and
RoboCop 2 and the remarkable Karen Sillas.) And it isn’t your typical horror movie, though it does feature creepy dolls. It’s somewhere between the two, an uncanny comedy in which the giant butcher knife only cuts a birthday cake but nonetheless no one gets out unscathed.
What Happened Was … won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, then was released with little fanfare by a distributor that didn’t know what to do with it. (Total U.S. gross, according to IMDb Pro: $327,000.) A cult classic and a favorite of Charlie Kaufman’s, this indelible portrait of dating dread has been newly restored and opens in virtual theaters on Friday. I talked to Noonan about the breakdown that led to his directing career, about the movie’s ....

Katrina, a bright high school graduate eldest child of former Economist correspondent Charles Wheelan tries to enjoy the family’s time in Bhutan, but there’s an infection on her ankle that’s looking worse by the day. Eleven-year-old CJ, the youngest Wheelan, usually can be found on the floor, crying. Sophie, the middle child, is in danger of failing her sophomore year in high school and has threatened a hunger strike by handwritten letter. There’s also the matter of a multi-entry visa to India: Katrina has only nine fingers, and the Kolkata bureaucracy requires a full set of fingerprints. Wheelan’s wife, Leah, meanwhile, insists the family “fun ....

Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm — and the pandemic is worsening the trend

comments
The studio audience showered me with hisses, nuh-uh s, and boos as I answered questions about my parenting. I was on an episode of a nationally syndicated talk show that aired on March 3, 2020, just weeks before parenting became a fuller-time job for millions of American women.
My sin? I let my 10-year-old ride public transportation without me. I reassured those at the show s taping that the regular drivers and riders of my daughter s route would be there to help in an emergency that she and/or her travel companions two other fifth-graders couldn t handle. Mel Robbins, the life-coach-turned-TV-personality who hosted the show, responded with a chilling judgment: You re outsourcing your parenting. ....

It has been nearly a year now since most of us have enjoyed a book in any of the usual places: a coffee shop, on a commute, in an airplane, on a beach. But that hasn t stopped people from reading — in fact, the opposite. Speaking personally, 2020 made me
extra grateful for all the moments I spent with paper and ink, away from yet another screen containing no good news.
Now we seem on the cusp of what is hopefully the beginning of the end, and it becomes possible again to imagine reading books in places like coffee shops or on transcontinental flights. But our to-be-read piles might be starting to look a little shorter after all those months in quarantine. ....
