EU members ‘must step up’ for European Universities The Council of the European Union, comprising ministers of EU member states, has called on European governments and higher education systems to support the European Universities Initiative (EUI) and make it a central to building a European Education Area by 2025. The ministers have urged more cooperation between education authorities, higher education institutions and stakeholders to remove obstacles to European level cooperation. In this context, they suggest exploring the need for and feasibility of joint European degrees within the alliance of ‘European Universities’. Why have Israeli scientists won so many ERC grants? On 22 April a delegation from the European Union visited Israel to celebrate 25 years of research and innovation (R&I) collaboration. The event, attended by European ambassadors, Israeli government officials and R&I stakeholders, marked a quarter century of growing R&I ties that started when Israel became associated to the Fourth EU Framework Programme for Research in 1996. “Since then, about 5,000 research contracts [have been] signed as a part of Israeli participation and more than 6,000 participants and about 1,000 SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises] have joined the cooperation in these projects with a total support from the EU of €2.5 billion [US$3 billion],” Deputy Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission Signe Ratso said in a message screened at the event. ....
How to succeed in the European Universities Initiative The European Union has published European Universities Factsheets giving comparative information on the 41 European Universities Initiative (EUI) alliances currently in operation and making themselves ready for the mid-term review of the EUI later in 2021. At the call of the two first rounds of the EUI it was explicitly stated by the EU Commission that the selected alliances are to serve as role models for “the path towards the EHEA [European Higher Education Area]”, and therefore it is of great interest for potential applicants and others to hear how these alliances have started operating their projects. ....

The European Universities Initiative has released new energy both for the Bologna Process and the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), according to a new analysis.
