Taunton fireworks: Hopewell Park neighbors want summer festival moved

TAUNTON Dozens of Hopewell Park neighbors want the city’s End of Summer fireworks moved from their neighborhood or canceled.
Leading the effort is Alex Kendzieski of Hopewell Street. For years, he’s warned that firework debris could spark blazes and the noise panics pets, wildlife and residents with medical conditions.
His complaints gained some traction at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, including from Councilor Deborah Carr.
“I don’t want to see any animals get hurt. I get constant calls about dogs being scared to death,” said Carr, saying the park isn’t an ideal location.
“If we can’t find an appropriate place, maybe we shouldn’t do it.” ....

Fire, police celebrate promotions, new hires in delayed gathering

Wicked Local
MANSFIELD – The Mansfield fire and police departments has celebrated a year’s worth of promotions and new hires.
The swearing-in ceremony held June 2 at the public safety building had been delayed repeatedly over the past year due to COVID restrictions.
As a result, seven firefighters and five police officers were sworn in together by Town Clerk Marianne Staples with parents, spouses and children all looking on.
“Some have been waiting awhile for this night,” Fire Chief Justin Desrosiers said. “Unfortunately, a lot of the promotions and hires tonight were in the midst of the COVID pandemic.
“As we all worked tirelessly through the pandemic Chief Sellon and myself sat down many times to plan a promotional ceremony. Every time we would try and plan one working around the restrictions at the time we always came to the conclusion that it would be in the best interest of the people being recognized if we just waited.” ....

Taunton Shows Up by the Carload for Two-Year-Old Battling Cancer

Taunton Shows Up by the Carload for Two-Year-Old Battling Cancer
Phillip Gaspar loves cars, his home city of Taunton, and giving back to the community.
At the beginning of the pandemic, he started a group called “Cars for Kids,” where he and his car-loving friends would host a parade of cars for children celebrating a birthday, so they didn’t have to celebrate alone. The community took part by keeping an eye out for Gaspar’s announcements on Facebook.
“Whoever was feeling selfless that day would come,” he explained. At one point, Gaspar was conducting six birthday parades in a day. Due to a busy schedule, he was forced to retire his group – until he heard about a two-year-old boy battling brain cancer that could use some company on his birthday. ....
