May 03, 2021 Nientara Anderson, MD, MHS and Dowin Boatright, MD, MBA, MHS Microaggressions are a common experience for medical students and are associated with a positive screening for depression, lower medical school satisfaction, and a higher risk of contemplating transfer or withdrawal from medical school. Female students, Black students, and students with other minoritized racial identities are more likely to experience microaggressions, which are defined as intentional or unintentional verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to the recipient based on their marginalized group membership. February 17, 2021 by Jeanna Lucci-Canapari A multi-institution symposium led by Yale School of Medicine treated more than 1,900 online participants from across the country to a showcase of research from a diverse group of talented postdoctoral researchers, with the goal of propelling their promising careers in scientific discovery. The Intersections Science Fellows Symposium was held through Zoom sessions and webinars from January 6 through 8, and was hosted by a coalition formed by Yale and 25 other national research institutions. The symposium featured the research contributions from 26 junior scientists, who were chosen to present their work as 2021 Intersection Science Fellows. January 20, 2021 by Abigail Roth Yale School of Medicine (YSM) students have led the effort, on campus and nationally, to advocate for first-generation and low-income (FGLI) students in medicine, creating organizations and developing resources to help students access and navigate medical school. This includes working to end the default perception that FGLI students are high-risk in medical school, and replace it with the recognition that their diverse perspectives significantly enhance medical education and will improve how health care is delivered. YSM fifth-year MD-PhD student Mytien Nguyen, MS, played a central role in the creation of two toolkits, one for first-generation medical school students and another for their advisors and families, launched nationally through the AAMC in November 2020.
