The lawsuit, filed on Dec. 17 in the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, states Layla Kunkle as a then 18-year-old high school student faced sexual advances and messages via various apps during her internship at the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office from multiple former deputies, a Cadiz Police Department officer, and former Sheriff Jason Barnes. ....
One evening âafter this period of groomingâ Barnes invited Kunkle to his home. When she arrived, the lawsuit stated, he offered her a mixed drink containing strawberry rum. The drink âcaused her to become very intoxicated.â The lawsuit claims that once Kunkle was intoxicated, Barnes had sex with her in his living room. After the act, Kunkle passed out on Barnesâ couch. Later in the evening, Barnes allegedly asked Kunkle if she wanted to sleep in the bedroom. He âhad to help her as she held onto the wall to be able to walk.â Kunkle passed out again in Barnesâ bed, the lawsuit stated. She woke up âas he got in bed and began having sex with her again before stopping.â ....
