Pennsylvaniaâs battle against COVID-19 took a dramatic turn Tuesday â 412 days after all non-life sustaining businesses were temporarily shuttered early in the pandemic â as the focus shifted away from restrictions and toward vaccinations to curb future outbreaks. Gov. Tom Wolf announced he is lifting all of the stateâs COVID-19 mitigation measures starting Memorial Day, except for his order requiring face masks. That will stay in place until 70% of Pennsylvania adults 18 and older are fully vaccinated. The plan is intended to boost waning interest in vaccinations. Effective May 31, we are lifting COVID mitigation orders. The masking order will be lifted when 70% of Pennsylvania adults are fully vaccinated.Help us lift the âmasking order sooner. THE ISSUE The Lancaster County Community Vaccination Center may close earlier than its previously announced closing date, LNP | LancasterOnlineâs Carter Walker reported last week, though there doesnât seem to be any clarity on when exactly it will close. âWhen plans for the community vaccination center at Park City Center were being finalized in February, Dr. Michael Ripchinski, the chief clinical officer for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, said the plan was to run the facility through the end of June,â Walker reported. LG Health spokesman John Lines said the Lancaster County Community Vaccination Center âis expected to continue operations at least through the beginning of June.â No decision, Lines said, had been âmade on a closure date prior to June 30.â ....
In my view, Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons is mistaken if he believes it is not his role to encourage people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 (âOfficial hints at closing site early,â April 28 LNP | LancasterOnline). Isnât it his job, and that of his fellow commissioners, to make sure that the county thrives? How is that going to happen if too many people choose not to get vaccinated? There is a role for government to play in defeating this pandemic, and encouraging people to get vaccinated is probably first and foremost. People donât always act in their own self-interest, and I believe that Parsons has a responsibility to push them to do the right thing. That doesnât make him part of the nanny state. It makes him a competent leader. ....
In a split vote, the Lancaster County commissioners repealed the emergency declaration which has been in place since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The countyâs declaration of a state of emergency was originally enacted by the board on March 17, 2020, to allow the county to sign contracts and make purchases of personal protective equipment without the need for the formal purchasing procedure, which is often time consuming. On Wednesday, Phil Colvin, the countyâs emergency management director, said the declaration was no longer needed. âThings have pretty much moved into a steady state,â Colvin said. âThe urgency in which we need to act to either purchase things or enter into contracts has definitely subsided in the past two months.â ....
The Lancaster County Community Vaccination Center will close about a month earlier than expected, Lancaster County Commissioner Craig Lehman confirmed Tuesday. When plans for the community vaccination center at the Bon Ton were being finalized in February, Dr. Michael Ripchinski, the chief clinical officer for Lancaster General Health, said the plan was to run the facility through the end of June. In response to a question from a reporter Tuesday, Lehman said on Twitter My information from this weekend and confirmed again today is that the CVC will operate until the beginning of June. Brett Marcy, spokesperson for the community vaccination center, said the center will stay open at least through early June, though no official decision has been made to close before the end of that month. He said that some staff hours have been reduced because of lower patient volume, but there has been no staff reduction. ....
