Philando Castile's death 5 years later highlights need for police reform: 'America, you must act'

Squad cam footage showed Yanez pulling over Castile’s car in Falcon Heights, Minn. Reports indicated that the initial stop was because another police officer radioed to Yanez and his partner that he believed the couple to be implicated in a robbery in the area and specified Castile due to his ‘wide-set nose.’
His girlfriend,
Yanez asked Castile for his identification and registration, which triggered a fatal sequence of events.
“Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me,” Castile, who was licensed to carry in Minnesota, an open-carry state told Yanez. ....

The Justice for Joshua Feast march is planned for noon in La Marque.
Feast died after the Dec. 9 shooting across the street from his uncle s house where he was staying. According to police, Officer Jose Santos was attempting to arrest Feast.
The 22-year-old s family says an independent autopsy showed he was shot in the back as he was running away. Police say Feast was holding a gun when originally confronted.
Previous demonstrations have called for the firing of Officer Santos and the La Marque police chief.
An investigation into what happened is still underway by the Galveston County Sheriff s Office. ....

Cullors, the foundation’s executive director, said that so far the Survival Fund’s first recipients have included the families of people killed by police or who died while incarcerated, grassroots community organizers, people who identify as transgender, single parents and formerly incarcerated individuals.
Before Thursday, at least 300 people had been approved for grants. The fund is being administered through UpTogether, a project of the Family Independence Initiative, which works to disrupt the cycle of poverty through direct investment to low-income families and budding entrepreneurs.
One Survival Fund recipient, Kusema Thomas, said he has been earning $1,500 less in monthly income since the start of the pandemic. The 45-year-old Los Angeles resident and father of 11-year-old and 4-year-old sons had been working as a community organizer and mental health specialist at a shelter for youth victims of domestic violence. His hours were cut back due to the pandemic. ....
