Capitol rioters boasted on social media. Now, they’re scrambling to scrub phones and pictures
While scores of Capitol rioters flaunted their role in the January 6 attack, a growing number of insurrectionists are accused of covering their tracks by destroying cellphones, wiping social media posts and threatening witnesses.

One man is accused of stealing a police officer’s body camera and another told her kids to delete photos from their phones. Other rioters allegedly threatened family members who might turn them in or lied directly to FBI agents when asked about their actions in Washington, DC. ....

Eager to help identify people who were part of the attack, they called the FBI. It became a sort of national cleansing.
“The book value of that lectern is $1,000, but its symbolism is priceless,” Mr. Mestel said. “And this [expletive] is walking it through the Capitol with that stupid smile like he’s carrying a sack of potatoes through Whole Foods.” ....

Active military personnel and veterans are over-represented among the first 150 people to be arrested and have records released for federal offenses in the violence and insurrection at the US Capitol.
Analysis by CNN of Pentagon records and court proceedings show 21 of the 150, or 14%, are current or former members of the US military. That is more than double the proportion of servicemen and women and veterans in the adult US population, calculated from Census Bureau and Department of Defense statistics. In 2018, there were 1.3 million active-duty members of the services and 18 million veterans. Togethe ....
