Witnesses in trial of Fall River s Jasiel Correia react to verdict

FALL RIVER Witnesses who testified in former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia II s federal corruption trial said on Friday they weren t surprised to see guilty verdicts come down on most counts. “He deserved what he got,” said businessman Steve Miller, one of the investors in SnoOwl Correia defrauded. “It’s pretty hard to sugarcoat what he did.” Corriea was convicted on 21 out of 24 counts of wire fraud, tax fraud, extortion and conspiracy. Pat Tod, who owns the warehouse where SnoOwl was located, called it astonishing that Correia was still exonerated on three counts. The jury found him not guilty on one count for bribing his then chief-of-staff Gen Andrade into giving him half of her salary and two counts for allegedly extorting Fall River property owner Tony Costa in exchange for a city permit to do work on a water main.

FALL RIVER Jay says he buys high-quality pot in Fall River not to get a buzz but to help him fall asleep. “I have horrible insomnia, and it helps me a lot,” said the 38-year-old Warwick resident, who didn’t want to reveal his last name. Jay says he’s not eligible for a medical cannabis card in Rhode Island  which is why he spends up to $200 every two months at the Northeast Alternatives dispensary on William S. Canning Boulevard off of Route 24 near the Tiverton line. “I have no choice but to come here,” Jay said on a recent weekday afternoon, as he held a small customer bag containing both smokable weed and cannabis wax, which is a concentrated form of cannabis oil.

mayoral Greed and marijuana drugs have brought Fall River to a new low

Joe Soares Joe Soares lives in Fall River. A corrupt mayor, a bunch of drug dealers, and millions of dollars in cash up for grabs. What could possibly go wrong? The answer is easy to explain. The legalization of marijuana was bought and paid for by drug dealers of one form or another. They paid for the referendum, and then paid to set up the marijuana regulatory system. This supervisory group are the ones who gave city mayors sole authority to issue “letters of non-opposition. Why would the Legislature set up a licensing system where drug dealers would only have to pay off one dishonest official? The reason only the mayor decides who gets the license is because the dealers wanted one-stop shopping. No need to involve the City Council or the health inspectors.

Live updates from corruption trial of former Fall River mayor Correia

BOSTON The corruption and fraud trial against Jasiel Correia II continued Tuesday, with a focus on allegations that the former Fall River mayor extorted hundreds of thousands of dollars from marjiuana companies. The day was capped by stunning testimony from Hildegar Camara, one of four alleged co-conspirators. Camara, who said he considered Correia to be like a son, has pleaded guilty to two counts of extortion, two counts of extortion conspiracy, and two counts of making false statements to federal prosecutors twice, on June 17 and 24, in relation to helping Correia solicit bribes from marijuana companies seeking local approval to set up shop in Fall River.
