Joseph Blumenthal: ‘Sometimes police are needed’ Published: 5/27/2021 3:20:42 PM I’m sure I’m not the only one who noticed the irony in Wednesday’s story about Tuesday’s demonstration in memory of George Floyd, where police had to come and break up a fight that started there. I think that the Department of Community Care with its mission of dealing with many situations without armed police presence is a great idea. But sometimes police are needed, and I’m glad they were there to stop the fight and prevent its potential escalation into something much worse. “Defund the Police” is probably one of the worst political slogans ever. While most of its proponents don’t really want to abolish the police, people who hear it can be forgiven for thinking that its proponents are anarchists who don’t care if public order disappears. It’s a short step from there to listening to demagogues who promise tough law enforcement, and maybe even voting for someo ....

The hearing was held to assess the application that the O’Connell Development Group of Holyoke has submitted to demolish the church built in 1904 on Hawley Street and Phillips Place and build townhouses on the property. After a lengthy presentation from the developer, as well as extensive public comment, the body voted 3-1 to deny the demolition until O’Connell comes back with more detailed drawings of the structures it intends to build on the site. ....
