Alex Kelley is new life enrichment coordinator for St Joseph County COA

From staff reports Kelley, of Sherwood, had been the receptionist at Oaks Enrichment Center in Sturgis since May 2018. Kelley, who attended Burr Oak High School and Glen Oaks Community College, possesses an extensive background in customer service and has demonstrated a passion for improving the lives of older adults in St. Joseph County, according to COA. Pamela Riley, COA executive director, said when she learned that the position of life enrichment coordinator was open, she knew Kelley would be a natural fit. “I have watched Alex interact with our members and her positivity and enthusiasm is exactly what we are looking for in a life enrichment coordinator,” Riley said. “Not only does she have the skills to welcome members to the center as a receptionist, she also has shown a desire to help plan and develop programs that will enrich their lives. I am thrilled she has accepted this position.”

St Joseph County Commission on Aging to resume in-person activities

From staff reports St. Joseph County Commission on Aging will resume offering in-person activities, such as group exercise classes and bingo, at both its enrichment centers, on March 15.  Class size is limited, so seniors must call COA to register, (269) 279-8083.  Masks are required at all times at the centers and there are markings on the floors and other signage to help to ensure social-distancing.  To see what is available, visit www.sjccoa.com. COA is not able to offer lunch at the centers, but can provide lunch-to-go. Call COA 48 hours in advance to place an order. A menu is available at the centers and on the COA website.

St Joseph County center brings portable Mardi Gras to seniors

Sturgis Journal Excitement was in the air Wednesday at St. Joseph County Commission on Aging in Sturgis and Three Rivers, as the facilities marked Mardi Gras with portable parties in a bag. Mardi Gras Day, set for Feb. 16 this year, also is known informally as “Fat Tuesday,” the last day of the carnival season before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Traditionally, people celebrate with sweets before giving up desserts and other items during the Lenten season. While the commission on aging hoped to hold an indoor party for its senior population, the pandemic shifted the party plan to a drive-through, with gift bags filled with items to celebrate the occasion.
