Two graduations for Burr Oak students dual enrolled at Glen Oaks

Alex Kelley is new life enrichment coordinator for St Joseph County COA

From staff reports Kelley, of Sherwood, had been the receptionist at Oaks Enrichment Center in Sturgis since May 2018. Kelley, who attended Burr Oak High School and Glen Oaks Community College, possesses an extensive background in customer service and has demonstrated a passion for improving the lives of older adults in St. Joseph County, according to COA. Pamela Riley, COA executive director, said when she learned that the position of life enrichment coordinator was open, she knew Kelley would be a natural fit. “I have watched Alex interact with our members and her positivity and enthusiasm is exactly what we are looking for in a life enrichment coordinator,” Riley said. “Not only does she have the skills to welcome members to the center as a receptionist, she also has shown a desire to help plan and develop programs that will enrich their lives. I am thrilled she has accepted this position.”

Area schools plan for 2021 prom, graduation

Sturgis Journal School districts in St. Joseph County are doing what they can amid the pandemic to give high school seniors a “normal” year-end celebration of prom and graduation. It has been more than a year since students began to integrate terms like “social- distancing,” “pods” and “pandemic” into daily life. The coronavirus has delayed or canceled numerous events in the past 14 months, but school officials throughout the county said they are putting into place plans to make events like prom and graduation happen, while still adhering to pandemic guidelines. Here is a roundup of plans at some of the schools in the Journal area. 

Rick Ultz of Burr Oak retires from dairy farm with a drive-by party

Rick Ultz was born a dairy farm, a stone s throw from the village of Burr Oak. On March 31, he retired from the dairy business. Along with farming, Ultz is long-time educator at Burr Oak High School. On Wednesday, that was an excuse to avoid seeing his bovine friends leave. When the cows were loaded in the morning and rolled out of the driveway, he wasn t there to watch. “I was a coward,” Ultz said. “I went to school . they were more than friends. We named all the cows.” He remembers Fair Queen, his mother’s 4-H milk cow that was still on the farm when he was young.
