Courtesy of Stoneham Historical Society and Museum The pages of the Reference copy of Joanne Harriman s book Images of America - Stoneham are dog-eared, showing their many years of use. The book contains over 200 vintage photographs with descriptive text and selected by the author to show our historically rich town as it once was. Ms. Harriman dedicated her professional life to education and was keenly aware what a valuable teaching tool this book could become. After retirement, she shifted much of her time to volunteering at the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum serving on the Board of Directors in many capacities. She was affectionately known to many as the Unofficial Town Historian and never missed the opportunity to inspire visitors to the museum with her stories of days gone by. Her professional training and innate skills resulted in a timeless publication. ....
Hancock Grammar School students go back to school HANCOCK Signs that life amid the pandemic may be returning to normal or at least a new normal were reflected in fuller classrooms starting last Thursday at Hancock Grammar School (HGS). Under Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines allowing three-foot social distancing among students (unless they are eating), the school is allowing all students who want to return to in-person instruction back in the classroom for four and a half days a week. “We’re all so excited to have the kids back in-person together,” said Joanne Harriman, the school’s principal. “With that 3-feet distancing, we can fit more desks in [classrooms].” ....

The many lawn signs around town indicate that our community is poised for elections for various government positions as well as informing voters of Warrant Articles for the upcoming May Town Meeting. Though current events may alter the protocol, the processes of planning ahead and having people in place to sustain our town s viability continues to remain critically important. Thankfully that privilege endures. ....
Wicked Local Submitted by the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum National Polar Bear Day is observed annually on Feb. 27. It is a day to learn more about polar bears and conservation efforts worldwide. It is also a day for many long-standing supporters of the Walter D. Stone Zoo Memorial Zoo to recall fond memories of everyone s favorite polar bear, Major. Major was adored by tens of thousands of visitors during his 21 years at our local historic zoo. Sadly, he was euthanized in June of 2000 at the age of 33 after it was determined that he was suffering from advanced stages of liver cancer with no options to restore his health. ....
