In Port Orange election, mail voting was the real winner

Sixteen percent of eligible voters cast ballots Tuesday in the Port Orange city election for the District 1 seat left unexpectedly open after the resignation of Marilyn Ford. Jonathan Foley won with 54% of the vote, defeating Marcey Kinney.  
It was a pleasant mid-season flex for local political players. Although the race was nonpartisan, Foley had local Republican support while many area Democrats backed Kinney. 
The 16 percent turnout may have seemed light, but it s excellent by off-year, special election standards. What was particularly notable was the continued wide use of mail-in ballots by voters of both parties. Fully 88 percent of the votes cast were mailed into the elections office.  ....

Canvassing Board Confirms Port Orange Special Election Results

Port Orange, FL - The Volusia County Canvassing Board met Friday morning and officially confirmed the results of Port Orange s special election. According to a report from the board, Jonathan Foley, who won Tuesday s (April 13) special election, had 669 more votes than his opponent, Marcey Ann Kinney. Foley had 4,129 votes—or 54.41 percent of the total vote—while Kinney had 3,460 votes—45.59 percent. Port Orange s special election came after former District 1 council member Dr. Marilyn Ford resigned in December 2020, stating that she was relocating. A month later, Foley was selected by the city council to serve as the interim District 1 council member following Ford s departure. Foley originally ran against Ford during another special election in June 2019. In that race, Ford was elected to finish the nearly four-year term left by her husband, Bob Ford, who passed away from cancer in December 2018. Ford additionally won that ....

Port Orange fires Fire Chief Ken Fustin after restaurant disturbance


Two weeks after an altercation at a local restaurant with Volusia County officials, Port Orange Fire Chief Ken Fustin has been fired.
“Mr. Fustin’s actions were inexcusable and did not meet the city’s standard expectation of employee behavior, especially from our executive staff, Interim City Manager Jamie Miller said in a news release issued late Thursday.  This type of conduct will not be tolerated as per our city policies and core values and has been dealt with quickly.
The  release said Fustin s conduct violated multiple city policies, and that he was relieved of his duties effective immediately.
Fustin was placed on paid leave April 7 as the city investigated words exchanged with Volusia County s Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo  a former Port Orange fire chief himself during an April 1 meeting. ....
