Wapello spring cleanup may depend on solid waste proposal

WAPELLO A spring cleanup day in Wapello may hinge on the city’s acceptance of a proposal that will be presented Thursday to the city council.
Members of the Louisa County Solid Waste Agency learned the general details of the proposal during its quarterly meeting on Tuesday from LCSWA Secretary/Wapello Transfer Station Manager Joellen Schantz and Kirt Adams, Wapello’s solid waste contracted hauler.
Adams explained his company had handled past cleanup days in Wapello on a volunteer basis, but time constraints and the costs of providing that service had increased, making a volunteer event this year financially impossible. ....

A Fiscal Year 2022 budget that projects $464,950 in expenditures was approved Tuesday during the quarterly meeting of the Louisa Regional Solid Waste Agency.
Over half of the budget, $281,800, would go toward Waste and Recycling costs, which would include $189,000 for disposal costs at a Milan, Illinois landfill. There would also be hauling; e-waste, appliance and tire disposal; and household hazard materials collection through the Muscatine Transfer Station included in that category.
Another major category would be Equipment, with $87,000 earmarked for purchase, repair and maintenance.
Payroll costs would be $$44,000; and in a related discussion, current secretary and transfer station manager Joellen Schantz agreed to continue serving in those positions for another year. ....
