DVIDS - News - Vietnam veteran source of pride for nephew in uniform

47
REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. Col. John Motszko was an infant when his uncle James Schueler returned from his tour of duty in Vietnam.
Even so, Uncle Jim’s wartime service has inspired Motszko throughout this military career.
“His service has always been a point of pride for me,” Motszko said. “During deployments and training, I always knew no matter how difficult things would get for me, he had survived far worse.”
Motsko’s 28 years of Army service includes multiple deployments to Iraq and other locations in the Middle-East, and to Bosnia. He has also served as the commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company 16th Special Troops Battalion in Baumholder, Germany. Currently, Motszko is the military deputy for Army Materiel Command’s Human Resources (G-1). His uncle is among several family members of AMC Headquarters employees who are being recognized through AMC’s Vietnam Veteran Commemoration Program. ....

Why We Should Read Poetry - BOMB Magazine

Brooke Matson is a Spokane-based poet and book artist whose latest collection, In Accelerated Silence
, explores the intersections of Big Science (think astrophysics) and Big Feeling (think grief and resilience). Both philosophical and grounded in the elements and the body, these poems read like missives from a starry night, when the body feels alive and the mind contemplative.
Hum by Jamaal May: Maybe because I read it on my first writing residency, May’s first full collection showcases his talent for word choice, rhythm, and creativity on the page. You can almost feel him pushing the boundaries of each poem in terms of structure, perspective, imagery, or all of them at once. The word choice is so spot-on that many of the poems take on a texture or resonant quality (as the title of the book implies). Needless to say, these poems inspired me to experiment during my residency and I still return to the poems often. Some have become do ....

He's Building a House by J. Howard Rosier | Poetry Foundation

A strange turn occurs toward the middle of Frederick Seidel’s 2009
Paris Review interview. The poet, whom Adam Kirsch once deemed the best in the United States, describes himself as coming late to an appreciation of New York School poets James Schuyler and Frank O’Hara. Until this point in the conversation, Seidel’s distinctive sensibility snapped into place commensurate with his biography. His patrician vocabulary and profoundly conservative sense of rhyme and meter gestured toward his Harvard education and his Sorbonne classes at midcentury. Visits to Ezra Pound in 1953 (who at the time was institutionalized and warding off a treason charge for his radio broadcasts in support of Hitler and Italian fascism during World War II) and T.S. Eliot (a fellow St. Louis native who, through talent and a penchant for self-invention, acted out an Anglophile’s version of what a poet should be) taught Seidel that achievement didn’t lie solely in a moralist’s idea of virtue and ....
