Double budget for Hudson County reentry program

Hudson County officials are hoping that the increase in funding for it prisoner reentry program will allow it to sever financial ties with ICE.
A Hudson County program that helps inmates ease back into the community and address substance-abuse issues will receive $4 million more in state funds this year more than double what it received last year.
The $7 million for the Hudson County Pilot Reentry Program could also give the county the wherewithal to end a controversial agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Under that deal, long-criticized by immigration advocates, the county rents jail space to the agency, which it uses to hold detainees. ....

Monday’s snowstorm transformed Hudson County’s normally busy streets into a winter wonderland, sending some out to shovel and others like Cyril out to simply enjoy the powdery snow.
“He’s already been out for two or three (walks),” added Martyn, who had taken Cyril for a loop around the Weehawken reservoir earlier in the day.
Between 10 and 14 inches were expected to fall in Jersey City on Monday, with several more possible overnight and into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Some parts of New Jersey have forecasts calling for up to 2 feet of snow by Tuesday, prompting Gov. Phil Murphy to declare a state of emergency. ....

But first, officials want potential ferry riders to take a survey.
Hudson County planning officials are studying whether new ferry routes could help move people in one of the state’s most populated counties and asking for residents’ help through an online ferry survey.
“Looking at Hudson County’s geographic location on two peninsulas, surrounded by water, we wanted to see if it would be feasible to connect additional locations by ferry routes,” said James Kennelly, county spokesman. “We wanted to explore the potential for new transportation options for Hudson County and the North Jersey region.” ....

Hudson County tries to limit protests against ICE jail contract

JERSEY CITY Emotions continue to run high as a renewed agreement with federal immigration officials prompted several nights of protests in Hudson County and now a restraining order against the demonstrations.
Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, as well as five county freeholders all Democrats had sought the temporary restraining order against activists demonstrating in front of DeGise’s home in Jersey City and the homes of the others named.
After an hours-long public hearing on the issue Nov. 24, the county recently renewed its contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to continue housing federal detainees in Hudson County jail.
That move came despite a proposal by DeGise in September 2018 to wind down the agreement, as reported previously by the Wall Street Journal. ....
