WSU students learned how sleep deprivation impacts wellbeing and performance in class during a Real Talk Thursdays event hosted by Cougar Health Services.
Sleep deprivation is neurotoxic, which means it can affect neurons and damage one’s brain, psychology graduate student Brenna Boyd said.
“Over time this can actually increase your risk of developing things like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease later on in life,” Boyd said.
Sleep disturbances can also impact memory and decision making because the part of the brain responsible for processing memory is uniquely susceptible to damage, she said.
Boyd said mood regulation can become an issue for those who have a hard time sleeping since the body’s ability to process hormones may be interrupted. People who are diagnosed with anxiety or depression can have a harder time controlling their emotions on low sleep.
PONTE VEDRA, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Graduate transfer Vincent Norrman picked up his first collegiate victory at Florida State on Tuesday, using a birdie on the 18th hole to shoot 13-under and win the Timuquana Collegiate held at Timuquana Country Club.
“Golf’s a game you don’t get to win a lot, especially as an individual. For Vincent to come out in his second tournament for Florida State and to get a win against a lot of really talented players is a testament to him,” FSU head coach Trey Jones said. “And the way he won the golf tournament by bogeying his 17th hole, all tied going into 18, and he drives it down the fairway and hits it to a foot…that’s the way you want to win the golf tournament. Couldn’t be prouder of him – he works hard. He will build on this.”

ORLANDO, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State Men’s Golf graduate transfer Vincent Norrman (Stockholm, Sweden) helped the International Team earn a dominant 40.5-19-5 Arnold Palmer Cup win on Dec. 21-23 at famed Bay Hill Club & Lodge. It is the International Team’s second straight win in the event.
Norrman, who comes to Florida State as the top Division II golfer in the country out of Georgia Southwestern, earned two points himself in an array of matches that make up amateur golf’s Ryder Cup.
In the Day 1 mixed fourball match on Monday, he teamed with Linn Grant to earn a half point after they halved with Team USA’s Julia Johnson and Garett Reband.
