Following the detection of the Brazil variant in the country, former Health Secretary and Iloilo Representative Janette Garin called on the Philippine government to use available COVID-19 vaccines to inoculate more individuals.
The lawmaker underscored the importance of enhancing immunization coverage, saying that the allotted second doses must be utilized as first dose to additional recipients. ....

Garin, a former DOH secretary during the Noynoy Aquino presidency, made the call as the country registered yesterday 4,578 additional coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases – the highest since September last year.
‘’Just when we thought we are slowly but surely beating this virus, the country shows a spike in cases. Knowing that we have vaccines in the country is not reason to be complacent,’’ she said.

A recent survey of the Octa Research Group indicated that only 46% of adult Filipinos are willing to be inoculated with a vaccine that would protect them against serious illnesses caused by the coronavirus. Octa is a polling and research group of experienced experts and academics with interdisciplinary backgrounds.
The resistance to anti-coronavirus vaccine has tremendous implications on the Department of Health’s objective of inoculating at least 70% of the population to achieve herd immunity when the great majority of the people have been immunized to the coronavirus, thus preventing its further spread. With only 46% immunized to COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), the other half of the population remains vulnerable to the coronavirus, the number of deaths is likely to rise. ....

Former health secretary and Iloilo Representative Janette Garin on Wednesday said the Food and Drug Administration s decision not to recommend Sinovac s COVID-19 vaccine to health workers should be reviewed.
FDA’s decision on Sinovac should be reviewed and revisited. For the nth time, we have heard our experts say, vaccination has three goals: To prevent severe disease and death, to prevent clinical disease, (and) to prevent transmission, Garin said in a virtual press conference of the House minority bloc. ....

Dr. Lulu Bravo, executive director of the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination, stressed this during a ‘’Bakit Bakuna Roadshow’’ for COVID-19 Vaccine Program for Communities forum at the House of Representatives today.
‘’It (vaccination) is safe even in immunocompromised people,’’ she explained, noting that there are now several vaccines being used globally.
Bravo emphasized that no vaccine is 100 percent safe and is not 100 percent effective.
She, however, emphasized that some vaccines prevent cancer and prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
Vaccines also empower women and promote peace, she said.
‘’Listen to our experts,’’ Bravo said, adding that a lot of communicating on the good effects of the COVID-19 vaccines is needed. ....
