His lessons to me about Calvin were just like, this is how you be a man, this is how you get stuff done, Caruso said. ....
Arizona Commission on the Arts Arts Commission Change Jaime Dempsey is leaving her position as executive director for Arizona Commission on the Arts, a state agency designed to foster the creative and professional development of the arts sector, in June. Dempsey will assume the newly created position of senior vice president for philanthropic initiatives with Arizona Community Foundation, which facilitates philanthropy in many sectors, including arts and culture. As of this writing, the commission had not announced its specific plans for conducting an open search to fill the executive director position. The Attacca Quartet is schedule to perform at Mesa Arts Center during the 2021/22 season. ....

They just made me feel so welcome, Foushee said. She landed a job at Arizona State University and left Seattle. Once she got back to the Valley one of the first things she did was find all the murals, then she created the Phoenix Mural Project, a virtual map of more than 700 photos of murals and their locations. ....
Jesse Yazzie was born with artistic talent, even if he didn t always appreciate his gift. “I can’t remember not drawing. It was always something I did for fun, but then when I started to get a little bit older, I put it away,” he said. “Until I started going to jail.” Yazzie would spend most of his young adult life in and out of jail for various reasons, a path that started on when he was 15. As a child he buried the skill he was born with, not knowing it would lead him to redemption. Now, at 27, his story has inspired others and the artist has a new mural in downtown Phoenix, a mural he painted just four months after his release. ....
Triumph Over Tragedy: A Muralistâs Journey to Recovery Jesse Yazzie stands in front of the Triumph over Tragedy mural on Roosevelt Row. Triumph Over Tragedy was unveiled Friday, Jan. 15, kicking off Roosevelt Rowâs UNCONTAINED outdoor project featuring four emerging Latino and Indigenous artists. The UNCONTAINED mural project provides a platform for Latino and Indigenous artists to showcase their stories on a shipping container in the Roosevelt Row Arts District, and Navajo artist Jesse Yazzie was selected as the first to display his work. When Yazzie got out of prison a few months ago, he had to mainly rely on his family to get back on his feet. His sister, who knew another muralist named Isaac Caruso, introduced the two artists and Yazzie assisted Caruso with a couple of projects. It was Caruso who encouraged Yazzie to apply for the UNCONTAINED project. ....
