A high-speed train from Savannah to Atlanta could be a possibility in the future

For most Savannahians looking to get to Atlanta, there are really only two options: drive or fly.
The drive is long and prone to Atlanta traffic. The flight is quick, but expensive. But both Amtrak and Georgia legislators are considering a third option that hasn t been available since 1971: a train.
Earlier this month, Amtrak released a proposed map of new and expanded service if it can land the $80 billion President Joe Biden proposed for the rail service as part of his American Jobs Plan, a massive $2 trillion plan to rebuild the nation s aging infrastructure.
On that map are quite a few railway expansions, including one that Amtrak abandoned in 1971 but that remains in the memory of some Savannahians: the line that was used by Nancy Hanks.  ....

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A bill passed during this year’s Georgia legislative session aims to help keep you safe from violent felons.
State Representative Jesse Petrea who represents the Chatham County islands says he has been attacking the issue of parole reform head-on because of the enormity of violent crimes that have happened over the years right in Chatham County.
“Most of those crimes are committed by a small subset of people who commit violent crimes over and over and over again,” said Rep. Petrea. ....

Georgia Democrats more concerned with criminals' rights than victims'

As citizens, we assume the public officials we elect are there to protect society from criminals. That’s not always the case. Some public officials are there to protect the criminals from society. This session of the Georgia General Assembly has shown that Georgia Democrats today are far more concerned with criminals’ rights than victims’ rights.
My bill, HB 168, allows an affected community’s district attorney to review the correctional record of the inmates convicted of violent and sexual crimes before they are released early on parole. The DA currently retains a right to object to an inmate’s early release. The bill simply gives them knowledge of the inmate’s behavior while in jail, and it applies only to those inmates convicted of violent crimes and violent sexual offenses. ....

A proposal allowing “legal representatives” more access to patients during health emergencies was approved by the Georgia House on Monday after emotional testimony by several lawmakers, including House Speaker David Ralston.
The chamber’s passage of House Bill 290, along with a flurry of other measures, came during Crossover Day. That’s the deadline for a bill to gain passage by at least one chamber of the Legislature or lose its chance to become law this year. (Occasionally such a dead bill is revived by attaching its provisions to another bill that has already passed a chamber.) ....
