Sunday, February 28, was a beautiful afternoon to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of our Veterans Park in Effingham County.  A large crowd attended and remained socially-distanced.  Ruth Lee, Major Danny Burgstiner, Reverend Delmons White, General Claude Kicklighter, Col. Lamar Crosby, Nathan Dickey, and Mose Mock participated in the program.  I was thankful to present a special House Resolution at the event.

District Attorney's stance on inmate paroles misunderstood


Every good trial lawyer is an expert at repeating one phrase: “I object.”
Even so, Chatham County District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones’ recent objection to a parole reform proposal was as befuddling to the public as the legal language in website terms of service agreements. Georgia House Bill 168, introduced by local lawmaker Jesse Petrea and passed by the House last month, is meant to assist prosecutors in challenging the early release of violent felons.
The bill, now being considered by the Senate, is specific to the worst of the worst, such as murderers, rapists, child molesters, kidnappers  the criminals that Cook Jones and her colleagues spend so much time and energy to put behind bars. ....

House Small Business Development Incentives and Education Workforce Subcommittee
Subcommittee Chairman Dale Washburn (R-Macon) called up one bill, HB 611, authored by Representative Mike Cheokas (R-Americus). HB 611 seeks to provide a new definition in O.C.G.A. 50-5-121(3) for the term, ‘small business.’ This legislation was brought to the General Assembly by Scott Hilton with the Georgia First Commission. The new definition creates three tiers:
Tier 1 - 10 or fewer employees or $1 million or less in gross receipts per year;
Tier 2 - 100 or fewer employees or $10 million or less in gross receipts per year; and
Tier 3 - 300 or fewer employees or $30 million or less in gross receipts per year. ....
