The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Aug. 28, 1963, galvanized hundreds of thousands in the streets of Washington, D.C. A. Philip Randolph helped to establish the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in Harlem, N.Y., on Aug. 25, 1925. The Haitian Revolution first broke the chains of French colonialism in August 1791. August marks the Nat Turner slave rebellion of 1831 and the Watts Uprising of 1965. The Philadelphia Police Department first raided the MOVE organization on Aug. 8, 1978, giving way to the unjustly imprisoned MOVE 9. August also bears the births of Fred Hampton, Marcus Garvey and Mutulu Shakur. ....

'A Lot of People Can Relate to Bobby Seale': Karon Davis on Why Her New Show About the Black Panther Leader Is Deeply Personal

Sandbags were a last-minute addition to sculptor Karon Davis’s newest installation or at least, replicas of them. The Black Panthers once piled up real ones around the perimeter of their various headquarters as makeshift fortifications against police raids. “No bullet was gonna penetrate three-foot walls,” Los Angeles Black Panther Party leader Geronimo Pratt once explained.
Davis had seen a picture of them, stacked one atop another like long, flat pillows, and was so taken aback by the lengths the Panthers had gone to protect themselves that she recreated them for her new show, “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished,” which opened at Jeffrey Deitch in New York on March 6.  ....

LARA - Orlene Hawks

LARA
LARA Team,
This month, we’ve been introduced to eleven LARA team members who all come from different places and who all fulfill different roles here in our department. But one thing they all have in common is their pride in their Black heritage. We heard stories of triumph and overcoming obstacles. We met men and women who were the first in their family to graduate. We read about several of our colleagues who gratefully acknowledge that those who came before us paved the way for us – and are committed to doing the same for those that follow in our footsteps.  ....

'41st & Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers' – People's World

Longtime political prisoner Geronimo Pratt (aka Geronimo Ji Jaga)
The 29th Pan African Film Festival has moved online, taking place Feb. 28–March 14.
This year’s PAFF is screening at least three Black Panther Party-related films: The documentary
Truth to Power: Barbara Lee Speaks for Me and
Judas and the Black Messiah, probably Hollywood’s best political feature in years. The third is a reprise of the 2009 documentary
41st & Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers, which was originally screened at PAFF in 2010 and again in 2017. I am repurposing parts of my 2017 review here:
41st & Central,
which is as exciting as any Hollywood shoot-’em-up, won PAFF’s Audience Favorite Award Documentary in 2010. The documentary was directed by Gregory Everett, son of ex-Panther Jeffrey Everett, who is among the film’s interviewees providing eyewitness accounts, along with Panther icons Kathleen Cleaver, Elaine Brown, Ericka Huggins, and lo ....
