I hope everyone had a pleasant Mother s Day this past Sunday and found a way to connect with that all important person in all our lives. So last week I wrote about the first two high schools in Somersworth and I promised to return to the subject this week and talk about school building number three.
Unlike the other two high schools, that would be located in the same place where Hilltop apartments can be found today, our third high school required a new building plot as well as some extensive planning. That planning would begin in 1948 when Mayor Romeo St. Laurent would form a 12-person committee to examine the needs, wants and possible sites for such a project. ....

I often find myself walking past the Somersworth Veterans Memorial, which is located in Stein Park on Main Street and thinking about those who are or who have served over the years. One of the stones in the park is dedicated to the crews of the USS Somersworth and for many years could be found in the park that bears its name. That park is located at the end of Main and Market streets. The Veterans Commission decided that it would be more fitting to have the stone placed in the Veterans park and that is exactly where it is today. ....

There have been 36 serving mayors in Somersworth since the community voted to become a city in 1893. The first of those mayors was Franklin N. Chase, who served for a year. The city s youngest mayor would be George Bald, who served from 1978 until 1984. Mayor Bald would be the last mayor who would govern under what is referred to as the strong mayor form of government. When Mayor Burkham took office after Bald he would be serving under the mayor/city manager form of government.
Now, you might be wondering what the differences between a strong mayor and that of the mayor/city manager form of government. The good news is that it has nothing to do with how much weight they can lift or how much they weigh. (At least it’s good news for them.) A strong mayor is basically the chief executive of the council and has the power to veto any measures that might be passed by the city council and is a ....

So I have to start this week s column with a confession. Last week when I took you through the history of the Greek Orthodox Church, I inadvertently said that the current Baptist Church on Cemetery Road was a Free Will Baptist when in fact it is the Free Baptist Church. So to anyone of the Baptist faith, I apologize and I promise to never make that mistake again.
So with my confession complete, I can now turn my full attention to Holy Trinity Church, which today we are familiar with on High Street, but it was not always so. In fact, for the first 107 years of its life, it could be found on the corner of Main and Walnut streets, where the Strafford Learning Center is located today. ....
